چکیده

Following on from the work of Goldstein and Gronberg, it is argued that under certain conditions, internal economies of scope form the bases for two types of agglomeration economy. These differ from two more familiar types, which are based on internal and external economies of scale. A further two types of agglomeration economy are shown to derive from different forms of external economy. The conditions under which agglomeration economies based on internal economies may co-exist with those based on external economies are then examined. This leads to a discussion of a scheme by which the various types of agglomeration economy may be drawn together within a common framework.

SOLVING FUZZY LINEAR PROGRAMMING PROBLEMS WITH LINEAR MEMBERSHIP FUNCTIONS-REVISITED

Recently, Gasimov and Yenilmez proposed an approach for solving two kinds of fuzzy linear programming (FLP) problems. Through the approach, each FLP problem is first defuzzified into an equivalent crisp problem which is non-linear and even non-convex. Then, the crisp problem is solved by the use of the modified subgradient method. In this paper we will have another look at the earlier defuzzifi...

Agglomeration and Trade Revisited ∗

The purpose of this article is twofold. First, we present an alternative model of agglomeration and trade that displays the main features of the recent economic geography literature while allowing for the derivation of analytical results by means of simple algebra. Second, we show how this framework can be used to permit (i) a welfare analysis of the agglomeration process, (ii) a fullfledged fo...

On the Contribution of Agglomeration Economies to the Spatial Concentration of U.s. Employment

Why does the level of economic activity vary so much across space? One reason given is “agglomeration economies,” meaning that a firm’s or household’s production costs (of market and home goods, respectively) are lower when production is carried out in close proximity to other firms and households. In this paper I explore, via a quantitative spatial macroeconomic model, the contribution of aggl...

Heritage and Agglomeration: The Akron Tyre Cluster Revisited

We use new data on the location and background of entrants into the US tyre industry to analyse why the industry became so regionally concentrated around Akron, Ohio, a small city with no compelling advantages for tyre production. We analyse where the Ohio entrants originated and conduct various analyses of how proximity to other tyre firms affected the longevity of tyre producers. We also exam...

Is Agglomeration a Free Lunch for New Exporters? Evidence from Chile

Unlike policy makers‟ belief that geographical proximity to incumbent exporters encourages non-exporters to start exporting through positive information externalities, the empirical evidence in early studies is mixed. To make a contribution to fill the gap, this paper reexamines the relationship between the spatial and industrial agglomeration of exporting firms and the probability of being an ...
